Newark Civic Center
A renewed sense of community spirit permeates the reimagined Newark Civic Center. This California landmark has been thoughtfully redesigned to strengthen the vital bond between citizens and city workers. Inspired by the principles of organic architecture, the design celebrates Newark's rich history and natural beauty, weaving together historical and contemporary symbols to unite and empower.
Visitors are welcomed by an etched-glass installation on the main facade, where symbols of the Ohlone Nation, the land's first people, intertwine with the iconic California poppy. This powerful imagery continues into the lobby, where custom terrazzo flooring mirrors the design, creating a welcoming and inclusive space.
For this project informed by F.L. Wright’s works, a contemporaneous version of the Johnson Wax Building dendriform columns has been imagined, featuring the trifoliate symbol of Newark City.
These columns are organized in a rythmic manner reminiscent of the Ancient Aegyptian peristyle hall, and bring some grandeur to the double-height lobby and the outdoor terrace.

Honoring Native traditions in the Chambers and their lobby through materiality:
weaved textures, like in traditional weaved baskets, on grass wallcoverings and upholstery,
traditional patterns reflected in acoustic felt panels,
lighting fixtures inspired by traditional jewelry.
