Promenade

A pediatric primary care clinic is completed in Baltimore, Maryland, to provide comprehensive care from birth age to eighteen.

PROMENADE is inspired by a walk in the woods of coastal Maryland.  The design immerses the young patients and their family in soothing and calming lush greenery. It includes elements that inspire curiosity for everyone, creating fun and engaging space for the children and their families. The clinic fosters connections between both patients and caregivers, creating a supportive community.

‘In every walk with nature, one receives far more than one seeks.’

John Muir, 1877

The waiting room is organized around a large tree that provides a sense of protection and belonging. The space, bathed with natural light, transports the visitor in a playful forest where positive distractions encourage the young visitors to detach and focus on what captures their attention, helping to distract them from the upcoming medical visit. Relaxing music with nature sounds contributes to relieve anxiety and stress. To increase the feeling of openness, the waiting room prolongs outdoor into a whimsical garden with lots of flowering plants. From the reception desk, young patients can confidently follow the rainbow to their exam room tagged with color. Each exam room has its own character and color scheme, and offers elements to focus patients’ attention.

The staff lounge and workroom form an open space secluded from the public areas, evoking a sense of retreat.
